In the States, Thursday is the Thanksgiving Holiday. Ideally, it is a time for gathering with friends or relatives and celebrating the many, many blessings in our lives. I’m all about bringing the sacred to everyday life, so I love Holy-Days that, at least in concept, are meant to bring more beauty into our experience.
Gratitude and appreciation are beautiful, attractive, harmonious feelings.
What better day than Thanksgiving to raise the vibe at your gathering and bring more meaning to your celebration?
Here are some suggestions:
Create leaves of thanks.
+ Cut leaf shapes from orange and yellow and tan paper. This is a great project for kids, and you can start it well in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. You can use real leaves as templates. Just trace around the leaf shape with chalk or pencil, and cut.
+ Place the leaves in a basket or bowl with gold, brown, red and orange pens or colored pencils or markers.
+ Pass the bowl, and have each guest write something for which they are thankful on a leaf. The leaves of thanks can be scattered across the table as part of the decorations.
Variation: have each person write their name on the reverse side of their leaves. Then, at dinner, guests can pick up the leaf nearest them, read the person’s name and say one thing they appreciate about that person.
Martha Stewart types can trim the leaves with gold glitter and place a branch in a gold planter, anchoring the branch with rocks. Then tie the thankful leaves to the branch and create a small tree of thanks.
Potluck of giving
In addition to whatever food or juice each person is bringing to the meal, ask each guest to also bring a non-perishible food item to donate to the local foodbank or soup kitchen. Celebrating your feast while helping others is a way to feed your soul and your body.

Remember, this is YOUR celebration. Keep the traditions that inspire, release those that feel heavy, and add new traditions to make your holiday more meaningful to YOU.
