Dec 19th – Wonder

Do you remember when you weren’t cool?

Somewhere along the line, long before adulthood, most children are pressured to curb their wonder and contain their enthusiasm. High school students practice boredom and apathy. Undergrads confuse cynicism with knowledge or sophistication. Young adults create a culture wherein one is expected to be “stressed” and “exhausted” to fit in with their peers. Middle-aged people confuse predictability with responsibility. People live indoors and watch screens day and night and call that “maturity.”

When we entered our bodies, we came with a natural built-in sense of wonder. Somewhere along the way, most of us learned to repress it. The reasons or stories you have about why you shut yourself down may seem valid, but they are not now.

Spend time with people who are facing death, and you will not hear anyone wishing they would have repressed their natural sense of wonder and curiousity more.
I have heard many people at the end of life wish they would have had more adventures, spent more time in Nature, traveled more, laughed more, explored more… But I have yet to hear anyone say they wished they would have explored less.

Observe people who have had near death experiences, and you may see an almost childlike appreciation of the beauties and little graces of everyday moments.

Life is inviting you to enjoy it’s magic.

You don’t have to be cool anymore.

Release yourself from the burden you took on at age 12 or 14 or 25 or yesterday to repress yourself.

Life is waiting. Stars are shooting across the night sky waiting for you to look up. The northern lights are dancing.

Wonder is personal. And wonder exists naturally in you. It may be buried somewhere in the back of an inner closet, but it’s in there.
Dig it out. Dust it off. Try it on.

Wonder increases Life Force.

Wonder is subjective. To quote Bruce Cockburn : “It depends on what you look at, obviously. But even more, it depends on the way that you see.”

Today, you are cordially invited to rediscover wonder!
Shake up your routine. Spend some time outdoors, and use your senses to experience the ever-changing wonderment that is Nature.

+ Take a walk outside tonight and look at the lighting displays and / or the stars.
Imagine you are a child again. Just walk and look and enjoy the lights. Wonder-full.

+ If you live where there’s snow, light a candle, and place it down a few inches in the snow. Then watch how all the nearby snow sparkles and glows. Wonder-full.

Look at someone or something with new eyes today.
Taste something you’ve never tasted before. Pet an animal. Observe the sky.

Today, cultivate wonder.

Timely, of course. Yesterday, Afternoon At The Palace was held at a different location on the property. This meant I sat facing in the opposite direction, with a totally new point-of-view. It awe-inspiring to look up at the lauhala tree with blue sky behind. I feel there will be regular visits to the property, with no agenda, just to sit (or lay) and BE. btw—luv the little boy pic at the top of this post.
