Here’s an old Shaker hymn I like, Simple Gifts. (You may recognize it from Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” or John Williams’ “Air & Simple Gifts”) :
“Tis a gift to be simple. ‘Tis a gift to be free.
‘Tis a gift to rise up where you ought to be.
And when we find ourselves in the place just right.
‘Twill be in the valley of Love & delight.
When true simplicity is gained.
To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed.
To turn, turn, will be our delight,
’til by turning, turning we come ’round right.”
Tonight is the festival of Rumi.
So why the Shaker song?
Rumi is associated with”the whirling dervishes” (darvish) of Sufi fame, who dance their devotion. “Til by turning, turning, we come ’round right.”
Isn’t it fascinating that around the world, across time and space, so many cultures have dances that involve turning in circles? It’s in our DNA. Literally.
And so much of the natural world moves in circular, eliptical and spiral patterns.
Rumi left such a beautiful imprint on the world. All these centuries later, his words still inspire. He placed a strong emphasis on Love, and lived and taught tolerance, kindness and openness. At a time when people liked to fight about religion and rules, he emphasized relationship.
“The Love-religion has no code or doctrine. Only God.” – Rumi
Rumi walked and danced his own unique path, and he encouraged others to do the same.
“You were born with potential.
You were born with goodness and trust.
You were born with ideals and dreams.
You were born with greatness.
You were born with wings.
You are not meant for crawling, so don’t.
You have wings.
Learn to use them and fly.”
- Rumi
+ Tonight, read some Rumi poetry, then put on some music, and dance.
“Dance, when you’re broken open.
Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
Dance in your blood.
Dance when you’re perfectly free.”
- Rumi
Depending on where you live, there may be Sufi dances in your community tonight where all who walk in Love and respect are welcome. If so, wear nice socks, and have some fun with good-hearted people!
“Remember, the entrance door to the sanctuary is inside you.” - Rumi
